Musician Joe Gwaladi, 35, is at risk of facing a 14 year jail sentence when he appears
before the court in Phalombe as police have charged him with a case of causing grievous harm
following assaulting and injuring his wife few days ago.
Public Relations Officer for Phalombe Police Station Jimmy Kapanja said that on the night of
October 22, 2023, Gwaladi left home for a bar within the area and he did not return home.
In the next morning, Gwaladi returned home where he asked his wife to accompany him to the
bar to continue drinking and the both returned home while drunk during the night.
Kapanja added that upon arrival at their house the couple started quarreling and later the
suspect started hitting his wife with burnt brick, which injured her on both arms, on the forehead
and cut off her left middle toe.
Under section 238 of Malawi Penal Code a person charged with grievous harm faces a
punishment of up to 14 years in jail.
Gwaladi hails from Namuthu Village, in the area of Traditional Authority Kaledzera in the district.
