most of us are familiar with this folktale as children we have heard the story of the child that was made of soil and could melt under rains
What I like about Malawi now is that we can have a solid conversation about our local movie productions. The audience has grown, the reception is incredible, but how did we get here? Allow me to take you back, at least two productions backwards, the country shaker “School Days” and what has recently become a household name, almost of course, the “Mushroom Shade”, there is no denying that these productions have played a huge role in arousing Malawians into the domestic film industry. But hey, we are not here for that. So recently I came across another local gem, Kamdothi if it´s worth my attention well it's something. Now let´s get into it
Kamdothi iwe thawa mvula, Kamdothi iwe thawa mvula! most of us are familiar with this folktale as children we have heard the story of the child that was made of soil and could melt under rains. This is also the inspiration behind the creation of the short film. According to the director and producer of the film, Daniel Ray Da Trindade, the story is his connection to his grandmother, who shared the folktale when he was young. Making the story more relatable to most Malawians.
The official trailer is out and we are almost close to getting the taste of the real thing. Back to my point of interest, will it put Malawi on the map? Is a good picture alone enough to carry us international? If you have seen the trailer, you will know what I am talking about, its yummy and very cinematic, but this is not new, they have been a few productions on the block that were great picture wise, aroused us and eventually left us dry. Allow me to point out the fact that the story originally is a good one, but will this production do it justice?
In short, we want to hear a story, we want to be entertained, we cannot afford to lose the audience we have had a hard time to capture. This production has one job to do, Deliver! The film is crowned with our renowned local film stars, Joyce Chavula and Flora Suya, and if you follow the industry, you will have to agree with me that they always kill it, I could go on and on. With that being said, let´s wait and see!
